Miami, FL —New Florida Majority Education Fund (NewFM-EF), in partnership with Citizen University, is hosting block parties this weekend dedicated to encouraging residents to vote in local elections in Miami.
The effort kicked off Thursday, Nov. 2nd as residents turned out for the celebration at Domino Park in Little Havana. Additional parties will be held near voting sites on Saturday, November 4 in Liberty City from 12-4 pm at Alonzo Kelly Park and Sunday, November 5 in Little Haiti from 12-4 pm at Notre Dame d’Haiti Catholic Church.
“We want to use these parties to show that democracy and voting can be fun,” said NewFM lead organizer Asa Shaw. “With the City of Miami electing a new mayor and three new commissioners, it’s really important for City community members to head to the polls during the early voting period and cast their ballot.”
The parties will feature free food and music by local DJ’s and artists. Music in Little Havana was provided by Colombian DJ Emerson Sierra & Salsa singer Luis Sierra. Music in Liberty City will be provided by local artists TJ Jumpp Jiggi, Luh Muh and Sekajipo ForThePeople. Music in Little Haiti will be provided by DJ Freezy J and Miami born Haitian artist Sheila B.
All three parties have been organized by NewFM-EF with the help of Hip Rock Star Public Relations as part of Citizen University’s the Joy of Voting Initiative. With the support of the Knight Foundation, Citizen University is partnering with artists and activists in cities around the country to create creative, communal experiences and rituals around local voting.
“The Joy of Voting is a simple idea that seeks to change the culture around voting and make it more fun. Driven by citizens, for citizens it pushes people to get involved in their community in an organic and fun way,” said George Abbott, Knight Foundation director for community and national initiatives.
The New Florida Majority Educational Fund (NewFM-EF) is the non-partisan, nonprofit, educational 501c(3) arm of the New Florida Majority (NewFM), an independent political organization working to increase the voting and political power of historically marginalized and excluded constituencies toward an inclusive, equitable, and just Florida.
