Local FPL Fracked Gas Burning Plant

Community Leaders Oppose the Dangerous Fracked Gas Plant That Could Have Damaging Environmental and Health Impacts in Broward County’s First Black Community

On Tuesday, February 13th from 6-8 pm, Dania Beach community leaders and New Florida Majority (NewFM) will host a “Power for All” community meeting at C.W. Thomas Park Recreation Center in Dania Beach. The meeting will call attention to Florida Power & Light (FPL) plans to rebuild and expand a fracked gas plant in Dania Beach and inform residents of the potentially dangerous impacts of the plant.

WHO: Community leaders, residents of Dania Beach and members of NewFM

WHAT: NewFM and community leaders will lead a conversation on the health, economic and environmental impacts of the proposed gas plant. Community residents and leaders will decide next steps and create a list of demands that they will deliver to FPL president Eric Silagy.

WHEN: Tuesday, February 13th from 6-8 PM.

WHERE: C.W. Thomas Park Recreation Center, 800 NW 2nd St, Dania Beach, FL 33004

Last month, residents traveled to Tallahassee to tell state regulars and Florida Power & Light representatives that a fracked gas burning plant was not needed or wanted in Dania Beach. The speakers said they were worried about the health impacts burning gas would have on current and future generations, the danger from potential explosions and the general lack of community outreach and any institutional role for community residents in the decision-making process.

Tuesday’s meeting is part of a larger effort to lower electric bills and push for a cleaner plant that is being organized as part of NewFM’s Power4AllFL campaign, which looks to train and empower community residents to take a more active role in ensuring that local energy decisions are in the best interest of ratepayers. Events have included private meetings with local elected officials and a neighborhood canvassing.
