New Florida Majority sponsored 30 community members to join young climate and social justice leaders in Orlando this weekend for Power Shift 2016 – South East, three days of workshops, trainings, speakers and movement-building surrounding climate justice issues.

Day 1 of the conference featured a mini-film festival, an engaging panel discussion, as well as an inspiring speech on the intersections between race, gender and climate justice by former Texas State Senator, Wendy Davis. Davis also spoke on the importance of reproductive health care, affordable child care and reproductive autonomy.

“We are here because we believe in something bigger than ourselves.” – Wendy Davis

Power Shift 2016 moderator, Anthony K. Rogers-Wright encouraged attendees to become “climate champions” by doing more than just acknowledging that climate change exists and panelists spoke about the importance of people of color leading the fight against climate injustice.

NewFM stands firmly against climate injustice and is excited to learn and build with these young changemakers for the remainder of the weekend. Some of the topics that we’ll be tackling include: eco-feminism, reproductive justice, racism and the fight for fair food.
