Miami, FL — Earlier today, New Florida Majority, a social justice and political action group, released the following statement from their Executive Director, Andrea Mercado, regarding Gov. Ron DeSantis’ outrageous claim that unemployment applicants are to blame for Florida’s continually broken unemployment system:
“It takes a special kind of arrogance to deny thousands upon thousands of people access to support they need during a global pandemic and then turn around and blame them for your own failures. But it turns out Gov. DeSantis is just that special kind of arrogant.
“Gov. DeSantis knew the unemployment system in his state didn’t work back in 2019 when the system’s numerous problems were reported in an audit, but he still did nothing to fix it. The system was intentionally designed to be nearly impossible to use, because it produced artificially low unemployment numbers that were politically convenient.
“Nevertheless, Gov. DeSantis shamelessly accused Floridians who have been unable to work, through no fault of their own, of failing to use the system properly. He then went on to state the barefaced lie that almost all of those who applied correctly have been paid. In reality, countless people who applied—correctly, I might add—back in March still haven’t received the money they’re owed.
“Gov. DeSantis’ comments display yet again how egregiously unfit he is for the office he holds. His comments are indicative of his childish inability to accept responsibility for his own mistakes. His callous ineptitude is embarrassing for the state, to say nothing of genuinely harmful to its residents.
“The governor should stop passing the buck and blaming the victims of his failures for his own fecklessness. He had no problem cutting taxes for wealthy corporations in the state, so why is it so difficult to give the people the relief they deserve? Governor, it’s time to cut the checks.”
