Palm Beach, FL – The New Florida Majority (NewFM) will host its Statewide People’s Assembly “Reclaim Democracy”, in Palm Beach on November 23-24, 2019, to build political power that centers Florida’s Black and Brown communities, and endorse a presidential candidate for 2020.

The Statewide People’s Assembly is a convening of New Florida Majority members, partners, and activists to discuss what is at stake for next year’s election and what it will take to advance democracy and racial equity. At the assembly, members and partners will vote on the presidential candidate that New Florida Majority will endorse as an organization.

This will be NewFM’s first-time-ever endorsing a presidential candidate and its members are an integral part of the endorsement process. During the 2018 gubernatorial race, NewFM endorsed Andrew Gillum early and reached over 1.5 million voters together with other community partners throughout the state. The endorsement process is fundamental to determine how and where the organization will focus its resources and capacity to mobilize its base of supporters and reach out to key voting blocs including Latinxs, Black voters, young voters, and women.

“We are reclaiming our democracy from the bottom up, modeling a participatory process where everyone learns about the candidates and is invited to have a say in who we endorse,” says Andrea Mercado, Director Ejecutivo de la Nueva Mayoría de la Florida. “We proved in 2018 that Floridians are not afraid of supporting bold candidates that are ready to propose transformative policies and resist racism and white supremacy, which led to Andrew Gillum’s nomination in the primaries. We learned that by listening to our people, so that’s what we are going to do.”
