SCOTUS se equivoca en la decisión de Husted

La estrecha decisión de la Corte Suprema de 5 a 4 es un triste revés para la democracia y amenaza la capacidad de los votantes para que sus voces se escuchen en nuestras elecciones.

Los Estados Unidos Corte Suprema gobernó 5-4 el martes 12 de junio en Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute que Ohio podría continuar usar un proceso agresivo por retirar a las personas de sus listas de votantes, diciendo que el procedimiento establecido por la ley no viola las protecciones federales a los votantes.

Andrea Mercado, Director Ejecutivo de la Nueva Mayoría de la Florida, dio a conocer la siguiente declaración sobre la decisión.

“La decisión estrecha de la Corte Suprema de 5-4 en Husted v. A. Philip Randolph InstitutEs un triste revés para la democracia y amenaza la capacidad de los votantes para que sus voces sean escuchadas en nuestras elecciones. Respaldamos la poderosa disidencia del juez Sotomayor y estamos de acuerdo en que la mayoría delgada ignora la historia de supresión de votantes contra la cual se promulgó la NVRA. Votar no es un derecho de “uso o pérdida”. Es un derecho fundamental que se remonta a la lucha por la libertad de esta nación.

Si bien los estados aún deben notificar si buscan eliminar a los votantes elegibles de la lista, la decisión crea el peligro de que otros estados persigan las mismas prácticas de depuración.

Es otro recordatorio de que las elecciones tienen consecuencias. El arco moral del universo puede inclinarse hacia la justicia, pero lo hace con la fuerza de nuestro activismo y nuestros votos. Estamos comprometidos a garantizar que los votantes recuerden este y otros errores de política en noviembre. Continuaremos luchando desde la corte hasta las calles para asegurar que la exclusión de votantes negros, marrones, pobres y otros votantes históricamente marginados no sea recodificada por ninguna legislatura estatal, especialmente en Florida.
