Earlier today, New Florida Majority released the following statement from Moné Holder, their Senior Director for Policy, Advocacy and Research, regarding the anticipated release of a presidential executive order to exclude undocumented Americans from the U.S. Census:

Trump’s anticipated executive order banning undocumented Americans from being counted in the U.S. Census is yet another example of the xenophobic, race-based fear mongering that is so often spewed from the highest levels of this administration.

This administration attempted something similar last year, when Trump tried to have a citizenship question added to the Census, only to have this blatantly racist and partisan maneuver struck down by the Supreme Court.

Surely, this new executive order will be challenged in the courts, but what remains is the message it sends. Donald Trump wants to be clear to millions of tax-paying, hard working, compassionate undocumented Americans: you are not welcome here.

It is a despicable scare-tactic against Latinx, Black and AAPI immigrant families, many of whom have been ironically doing the essential work that keeps our country and our economy running during the current global crisis.
