MIAMI —New Florida Majority and community partners held a press conference today at the Miami-Dade Elections Department to deliver a letter to the Supervisor of Elections demanding action on the 127,000 petitions submitted calling for a ballot initiative to create more accountable and transparent county elections. It’s been nine days and counting since the petitions were submitted, while no action has been taken by county commissioners or mayor.
The signers of the letter include New Florida Majority Executive Director Gihan Perera, South Florida AFL-CIO Executive Director Cynthia Hernandez, League of Women Voters Miami-Dade President Susan Windmiller, Trenise Bryant of Miami Workers Center, and Engage Miami Board Member Juan Cuba. The petition verification process stalled following a county commission meeting this week that failed to make quorum and trigger the verification process. New Florida Majority, along with partners, is working swiftly to ensure the voices of Miami-Dade voters are not silenced by the inaction of the county commissioners.
