New Florida Majority Leaders Stand in Solidarity with Florida Protests for Black Lives

The New Florida Majority stands in solidarity with communities around the country that are challenging generations of indignity, marginalization, and corrupt and racist power structures.

Miami, FL — As Florida faces a weekend full of protests after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis Police Officer, Dwight Bullard, Political Director of the New Florida Majority released the following statement:

“The New Florida Majority stands in solidarity with communities around the country that are challenging generations of indignity, marginalization, and  corrupt and racist power structures. We anticipate that many of our members and leaders will be asked to step into leadership positions as rallies and marches take place in the coming days. We know that those leaders will rely not only on their passion for community, but on their training for times like these. As we look to change conditions and policies, we stand by our New Florida Majority staff, members and leaders as they engage and organize with the community in this moment.

“We recognize that dismantling the infrastructure produced by hundreds of years of racist policy and practice will not happen overnight. That is why we stand steadfast and committed to organizing and fighting for the liberation of communities that have too often been disregarded. Our hope is that people, both here in Florida and around the country, will join with organizations like ours that are dedicated to long term power building. Together we will win!”

In just the last few years, our supporters have helped us stand up to the political establishment and reclaim our democracy: expanding voter registration in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, raising wages for workers in Miami, registering tens of thousands of new voters in black and brown communities, and shifting the balance of power in the Sunshine State for good.
