New Florida Majority Releases Statement on Unknown Whereabouts of Governor Ron DeSantis

“Florida needs to have an honest conversation surrounding the systemic racism that permeates our criminal justice system and work to implement solutions to this issue, but you’re going to have to come out of hiding first.”

Miami, FL — Earlier today, New Florida Majority released the following statement from their Executive Director, Andrea Mercado, regarding the currently unknown whereabouts of Gov. Ron DeSantis:

Gov. DeSantis, where are you? We’re worried about you! It seems as though we saw you every day just a few weeks ago. Back then, you had no reservations about stepping up to the podium to spew bombastic half-truths, speculative innuendo and downright lies about the state’s response to the coronavirus—infection rates have skyrocketed, by the way, if you’d care to address that.

Now, as the president hides in his bunker on Pennsylvania Avenue, where are you? Cowering in camaraderie with your bunker buddy? Honestly, we’re on the verge of putting your face on the back of a milk carton if we don’t see any signs of life soon.

Wherever you are, you must be aware that much of the country is rightly outraged at the epidemic of police brutality in our nation. Florida needs to have an honest conversation surrounding the systemic racism that permeates our criminal justice system and work to implement solutions to this issue, but you’re going to have to come out of hiding first.

Governor, you can’t just keep limping from crisis to crisis, it’s untenable. You can’t hide alongside the liar-in-chief and pretend everything’s normal. You signed up for this. You wanted to lead this state. Now is the time to do that. These problems won’t go away. These issues are historical, they haven’t resolved themselves over the past 400 years and they’re not going to. It’s going to take hard work from people in power, people like yourself.

We’re ready to do the work, are you? Hide if you like, but sooner or later, you’re going to have to do your job. Maybe start by paying out those unemployment checks you said were sent, but never actually were. It’s time Florida had a governor that actually, you know, governed.
