|Earlier today, New Florida Majority, one of the largest racial justice and political action organizations in the state, released the following statement from their Senior Director for Policy, Advocacy and Research, Moné Holder, regarding Donald Trump’s abrupt announcement that they will no longer hold the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville:|
The president’s abrupt announcement last night that he will no longer hold several key events of the Republican National Convention here in Jacksonville comes as a relief to our community.
We have seen time and time again the incisive brand of hatred and vitriol that accompany any and all of Donald Trump’s speaking engagements, and we know there is no place for that in Jacksonville.
We have also seen how callous and cavalier the president and his event-planners are when it comes to COVID-19 safety measures. As a community, we are without a doubt safer because this event was cancelled.
We can only hope that this abrupt about-face sends a strong enough message to Governor DeSantis. That maybe now he will finally accept that the coronavirus in Florida is a serious problem that demands a serious response.
Unfortunately, throughout this pandemic, the governor has shown us that his capacity to ignore the needs of his constituents is truly limitless.
We will not miss the president in Jacksonville this summer.

In just the last few years, our supporters have helped us stand up to the political establishment and reclaim our democracy: expanding voter registration in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, raising wages for workers in Miami, registering tens of thousands of new voters in black and brown communities, and shifting the balance of power in the Sunshine State for good.
