The New Florida Majority released the following statement in response to news that the GEO Group had sent a cease and desist letter to the Florida civil rights group Dream Defenders ahead of their National Day of Action against the private prison contractor.

“The profit-motives of companies like the GEO Group is fueling the continued detention and incarceration of communities of color, despite record drops in crime and substantial evidence of more successful alternative means of deterence and rehabilitation. The public deserves to know the moral valley that corporations like these occupy and the insane amount of money that they throw at politicians to help support laws that overwhemingly serve their bottom line and shareholders.

Floridians have a strong tradition of supporting transparency, as witnessed by some of the strongest Sunshine laws in the nation. If the GEO GROUP can’t take having their efforts in full display for the public to judge, then perhaps they should review what it means to operate a business in a democracy. The public has every right to hold corporations accountable for how they make their money, especially when those records profits come at the expense of those most impacted by mass incarceration.”
