MIAMI— The New Florida Majority issued the following statement after President Donald Trump announced the creation of a “Commission on Election Integrity” through an Executive Order:
“The Trump Administration’s decision to examine the process of voting in this country would be welcome news if it didn’t come at a time when the Administration was looking to distract the public from the firing of FBI Director James Comey or the investigation into possible collusion with Russian officials in the 2016 election. Or quite simply, if it weren’t expected to include leadership that has, more often than not, made it difficult for Americans to exercise the franchise.
With the public’s distrust of government at historically high levels, it would be politically irresponsible and morally wrong if this commission was just another partisan ruse to justify voter suppression efforts. But it wouldn’t be surprising. Court cases over the last year in places like Texas, Georgia and even Florida have all witnessed efforts by various GOP officials to limit eligibility and place undue burdens on citizens trying to vote In regular and special elections. These efforts disproportionately affect people of color and low-income communities, where everything from the cost of identification documents to the limiting of early voting hours on weekends limits access and discourages turnout.
Voting is a fundamental human right that should be respected and supported at all levels. Leaders in Florida and across the nation will continue to use all the tools that democracy affords to make sure that this right is not only defended but expanded to all those who should be eligible. We will speak out on efforts to limit civic participation, build Black and Brown electoral strength and never stop striving towards a system where everyone’s vote has an equally powerful say in the course of this nation.”
