Florida New Majority Executive Director Gihan Perera on Monday told MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts that the media and progressives need to keep focused on the real issues that are important to every day people.
“Immigration reform is getting stuck in the house. There’s been a spate of shootings in New Orleans and this past weekend in Chicago,” said Perera. “We’ve really got to do a good job of sticking back to those issues and making some difference.”
Perera said that selection of Tea Party favorite E.W. Jackson for Virginia Lt. Governor shows how the group continues to pull Republicans to the extreme right.
“It shows that the Tea Party and the extreme wing is going to go after and try and recruit African- Americans and Latinos,” said Perera. “As we watch them go more extreme, it’s a call for democrats and republicans to stick to the core issues our constituencies care about.”
