Labor organizations protested Wednesday morning in front of the Boca Raton Resort & Club, where private prison management company The GEO Group was holding its annual meeting.
The group included protesters from Dream Defenders, Florida Immigrant Coalition, Florida New Majority and Miami Workers Center. The protest was held to call attention to GEO’s “targeting of black, Latino and immigrant communities to fill their prisons and immigrant detention facilities,” according to a news release.
Pablo Paez, spokesman for Boca Raton-based GEO Group, said the company doesn’t take a position or advocate for any specific immigration or criminal justice policy.
“GEO’s facilities provide high-quality services in safe, secure and humane residential environments, and our company strongly refutes allegations to the contrary,” he said.
GEO Group has faced allegations of poor treatment of inmates and employees over the years, and its meetings have frequently attracted protesters.
