Things Are Not OK in Florida

New Florida Majority, a racial justice and political action group, released the following statement from their Political Director, Dwight Bullard, regarding Vice President Pence’s trip to Florida to meet with Gov. Ron DeSantis about the rapid increase in Coronavirus infections in the state

Miami, FL —Earlier today, New Florida Majority, a racial justice and political action group, released the following statement from their Political Director, Dwight Bullard, regarding Vice President Pence’s trip to Florida to meet with Gov. Ron DeSantis about the rapid increase in coronavirus infections in the state:

“In the intervening time since Vice President Pence last visited the Sunshine State, Governor DeSantis has managed to make the situation in Florida even worse than it was before. While the Trump administration has dispatched its top deputy to bail out the president’s bunker buddy, hundreds of thousands of Floridians continue to suffer the impact of this governor’s—and this administration’s—failures to contain the coronavirus.

“Governor DeSantis continues to deny Floridians the unemployment benefits they are entitled to; he’s failed to extend the moratorium on evictions, forcing families out on the streets; and his only response to the exponential increase in COVID-19 transmission has been to level erroneous, race-based accusations at agriculture workers who labor tirelessly so Floridians can put food on their tables.

“Vice President Pence has been at best a passive spectator and at worst a willing accomplice to this administration’s campaign of incompetence. We should expect nothing more than shallow statements and photo ops from his most recent visit. For them, it’s always been about the show and never been about results.

“We encourage the Vice President and the governor to take decisive action to provide relief for Floridians who are hurting; to cut the checks, cancel rent and actually help us navigate this crisis with candor and dignity. But we’re not holding our breath.”
