Judge orders Miami-Dade County to put campaign finance initiative on Nov. 2016 ballot
MIAMI — New Florida Majority Executive Director Gihan Perera released the following statement following a ruling by Miami-Dade County Judge William Thomas today ordering An Accountable Miami-Dade’s citizen-led initiative on the ballot this November.
“The real winners of today are Miami-Dade voters who now have the opportunity to make their voice heard this November,” said Gihan Perera. “A grassroots effort of this magnitude is unprecedented, especially in Miami-Dade where moneyed interests and big-shot lobbyists are used to calling all the plays.
“After 127,000 Miami-Dade voters signed the petition calling for greater transparency and accountability in local elections, thousands more joined the ranks to make phone calls, emails, tweets and in-person visits calling on the county to follow through and put the measure on November’s ballot.
“Today democracy prevailed, and we’re one step closer to ensuring everyday voters have the ability to participate in the political process and have a stronger voice in our county elections.”
